“Mathematics has been defined as the “universal language of numbers,” a language whose basic principles remain the same for all users. Many rouroutine activities, from balancing a checkbook to measuring ingredients for a recipe, require a certain familiarity with mathematical concepts and appliapplications.

In Macmillan’s Nlathematics encyclopedia, users will learn more about the function of mathematics in everyday life, as well as its role as a tool for measurement, data analysis, and technological development. InterInterdisciplinary in scope, the encyclopedia provides students with a clear and comprehensive introduction to this vast topic through nearly three hundred entries commissioned especially for the set.

A Broader Look at Mathematics For many people, mathematics and its basic disciplines—such as algealgebra, geometry, and trigonometry—are subjects of fear and dread. The goal of the Mathematics encyclopedia is to make these topics more accessible and interesting to students and the general user. Readers will learn that Mathemathematics is much more than numbers alone—it is also an integral part of his history and culture. Biographical entries highlight mathematicians who have made significant contributions to the field. Over thirty career-related artiarticles offer examples of mathematics “on the job,” whether it’s a nutritionist calculating dietary needs or a photographer compensating for low-light conconditions. Entries on applications explore the role of mathematics in our modmodern world, from everyday conveniences to global communication methods and a multitude of scientific and technological advances.

Organization of the Material The authors who contributed entries to Mathematics bring a variety of expertise to the subject, and include members of academic institutions, math educators, and curriculum specialists. Contributors used their subject knowledge to write entries that are authoritative and up-to-date, but free of overly technological terms or scientific jargon. Many entries are illustrated, and numerous equations, tables, figures, and sidebars help illuminate the text.

Unfamiliar terms and concepts are highlighted and defined in the margin, while cross-references direct users to articles of related interest. Most entries feature a selected bibliography, including Internet resources. Each volume includes a topical outline, glossary, and index, with a cumulative index to the entire set appearing in volume 4.”

Cultural Intelligence: A Guide to Working with People from Other Cultures

Information

Intercultural Press | 2004-01 | ISBN: 1931930007 | 200 pages | PDF | 2,1 MB

Imagine a guidebook that helps you navigate the uncharted lands of strange cultures or, at least, cultures that seem strange to you. Author Brooks Peterson is less concerned with social advice than he is with explaining how to manage broad cultural differences and avoid cultural egocentrism. While he soundly reviews measures of cultural differences, such as cultural scales, he avoids delving into complex, abstract theories with little practical application. His clearly written book treats all cultures objectively, covering broad tendencies without venturing into cultural generalities. He alerts you to the nuances of other cultures and your own.

Packed with dozens of engaging stories, case examples and humorous contemporary cartoons, Cultural Intelligence is the perfect antidote for overcoming cross-cultural differences, improving workplace communication, building solid business relationships and adding to your organization’s bottom line. Using a set of twenty business-oriented dimensions, Dr. Peterson helps you examine your own cultural style and determine that of others in six vital areas: management, strategy, planning, personnel, communication and reasoning. The crowning piece is a powerful set of Peterson key action steps for increasing your own cultural intelligence. Brooks Peterson founded Across Cultures, Inc. in 1997 and is an experienced cross-cultural trainer and consultant. American Express, Intel, Volvo, Microsoft and others have used his Peterson Cultural Style Indicator™.

Yazar: Raymond Murphy
Dosya Tipi : PDF
Dosya Boyutu : 65,9 Mb

A self-study reference and practice book for intermediate students of English. This book is well suited to students wanting help with English grammar with it’s well written and easy to follow explanations and exercises.
As an English teacher I also find this book useful. The units are organised into grammatical categories making it easy to use. It’s also a great source of additional course material in cases where grammar needs to be worked on.
The book is sold with or without a CD Rom, which contains further exercises on the units in the book and students/teachers can select questions to compile their own tests.
Answers to the exercises in the book are listed in a section at the back of the book for easy checking.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone studying or teaching English. It’s by far one of the best of it’s kind.

Highly recommended.

One of the most influential vampire novels of the 20th century, I Am Legend regularly appears on the “10 Best” lists of numerous critical studies of the horror genre. As Richard Matheson’s third novel, it was first marketed as science fiction (for although written in 1954, the story takes place in a future 1976). A terrible plague has decimated the world, and those who were unfortunate enough to survive have been transformed into blood-thirsty creatures of the night. Except, that is, for Robert Neville. He alone appears to be immune to this disease, but the grim irony is that now he is the outsider. He is the legendary monster who must be destroyed because he is different from everyone else. Employing a stark, almost documentary style, Richard Matheson was one of the first writers to convince us that the undead can lurk in a local supermarket freezer as well as a remote Gothic castle. His influence on a generation of bestselling authors–including Stephen King and Dean Koontz–who first read him in their youth is, well, legendary
